Stories from the Centre

Nathaniel from South Sudan

We asked a handful of students from Buunga hill to pick their favourite books from the centre and come read for us. One by one, these children read fluently and remarkably. The last little boy to come read marched forward with confidence, plopped down in the chair in front of us, and opened up his favourite book. He began reading and it was clear he was determined to finish this book about hot dogs for us, cover to cover. His character was so distinct from the rest, Karine stopped him, intrigued, and asked to hear his story, but not the one from the book.

“Where are you from?” she asked
“South Sudan”
“When’s the last time you saw your family?”
“2010”

He hadn’t seen his family in 4 years…

Karine responded with empathy, “I just want you to know, that your mother loves you very much”

He smiled shyly, and continued on reading with determination as we all held back tears
